Head-to-Head’s Up: 11/13-11/19

Happy Veterans’ Day everyone.  I’d like to express my personal gratitude to NBA veterans Gary Payton, Sam Cassell, Alonzo Mourning, and Eddie Jones for their dedicated service and for playing way too long past their prime.  God Bless America and the NBA (excluding the Toronto Raptors of course).
Let’s take a look at next week:

Four games: Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New Jersey, New York, Portland, San Antonio, Seattle.

Three Games: Charlotte, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Golden State, Houston, Indiana, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New Orleans, Orlando, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Toronto, Utah, Washington.

Two Games: Atlanta, LA Clippers, LA Lakers, Phoenix.

Plug ‘em in, Plug ‘em in:

Ryan Gomes, F:  Al Jefferson was off to a decent start this season, but he decided to pull a “Ben Roethlisberger” and have an emergency appendectomy, sidelining him for 2-3 weeks.  Let’s just hope Jefferson doesn’t like to cruise at high speeds on his motorcycle in his free time.  Gomes’ value jumps up in the short term, as he will see the bulk of the minutes at PF.    It’s fair to expect averages of 12/8/2 as long as Big Al is out.  Gomes is a smart play with four good matchups next week (ORL, IND, POR, @NY)

Monta Ellis, G:  The Warriors second leading scorer (16.8ppg), Ellis was inserted into Don Nelson’s starting lineup last night in place of Jason Richardson.  J-Rich’s surgically repaired right knee is apparently not holding up too well.  Even if he returns soon, Richardson will likely be limited and Ellis will pick up the slack.  The second-year guard is a good call with the Warriors hitting the hardwood four times next week.

Brevin Knight, PG:  It seems like I count him out every year and then he manages to prove me wrong by remaining a starter and dishing the assists (7.0) and racking up steals (2.5).  Knight and second-year man Ray Felton have both been starting in Charlotte’s backcourt.  Although Felton is supposed to be the one putting up points, BK has actually been outperforming the former Tar Heel on offense (16.3 vs. 13.8 ppg).  As long as Brevin is in the Bobcat’s starting lineup, he needs to be in yours.

Jamal Crawford, SG:  When a player goes down, a teammate must step up.  That’s just one of the fundamental laws of fantasy basketball.  DM discussed Crawford’s breakout game (35/6/7 w/ 4 treys) the other night starting in place of injured Stevie Francis.  Crawford is one of fantasy hoops best players without a starting gig.  When given the minutes he simply produces.  As a bona fide scorer, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Crawford average 18/3/5 with 2 threes as a starter.  Those are 4th round-type numbers coming from someone who may be available in your league’s free agent pool. You should scoop him up immediately and plug him in for four tilts next week.

Jamaal Magloire, C: Big and scrappy, not too flashy.  In fantasy we don’t care about flash we just need some solid contributions in certain categories from the big man.  Jam Master Mags, as I like to call him, has seen an increase in playing time since replacing starter Joel Przybilla (abdominal strain) at center the last three games.  With starter’s minutes, he should approach a double-double and a blocked shot per night.  If you’re in need of a second center, Jam is not a bad option with four games next week.

Donyell Marshall, F:  We’re definitely past the days when Donyell would fill up the statsheet and be a monster on the boards, but in 2006 he’s still got some value coming off the bench in Cleveland.   Currently averaging 12/4/1 with 2 threes, Donyell is an asset from long range and could always get hot and drop 20 and 10 one night.  Take a shot with Marshmallow… the Cavs have four nice matchups coming up (@NY, POR, MIN, @WAS).

Earl Watson, PG:  I’ve never been one to recommend backup PGs, but you could do worse than Watson this week.  He’s averaging 8/3/5 with a three and 1.6 steals thus far.  He’s one of those guys that if he gets a hot hand, coach Bob Hill won’t hesitate keeping him in the game for extended minutes.  He’ll forever be referred to as the team’s proverbial “spark-plug,” but he might just jumpstart your fantasy squad this week.  With four games on tap, you gotta give him the nod over guys like Shaun Livingston (2 games), Smush Parker (2), and Speedy Claxton (2).

Finally, with only two games on the schedule, you probably want to bench any Lakers not named Kobe and any Suns not named Nash or the Matrix.

Chris Kaman is really struggling, probably for the reason you discussed in your post on centers… think his numbers will improve?

Okay, so I just completed a trade the other day where I sent out Larry Hughes and Zaza Pachulia for Deng and David West.

I now have the opportunity to trade Deng back, straight-up for Josh Howard. Would you guys take this deal? They’re numbers are insanely similar, with Deng probably getting more boards/blocks and Howard getting more 3s/steals.

I’m tempted to go ahead and push it through because Howard is starting shoot lots more threes, specifically if you look at preseason and last year’s playoffs.

Anyways, what are your guy’s opinions on this potential deal?

Thanks.

do that in a heartbeat! dengs minutes can vary from game to game, he avg’d 33 last year and is again getting 30+. however, i dont trust the bulls offensive gameplan or skiles, its like organized confusion in chicago :)

but howard is the 3rd option on his team behind terry and nowitski on a more established offense. if that was offered to me, id jump all over it.

Jeremy:

In a Deng/Howard deal, I like Howard - only with the caveat that he is extremely fragile. Last year he played only 59 games with a variety of ailments and he’s already out with a sprained ankle this year.

Yes, I own him. And, yes, I’m frustrated.

Speaking of frustrating, what the fuck is up with AK47? After years as the Jazz’ unquestioned star, it doesn’t look like he’s adjusted well to being relegated to the fourth option behind Boozer, Okur & Williams. With the exception of blocks, his numbers this year have been relentlessly mediocre. What do y’all think? Will he eventually turn it around or should I peddle him now while his name alone might still net me something good in return?

Guys, I’m wondering about some waiver players that I potentially should pick up. My current team is:

Deron Williams
Paul Pierce
Joe Johnson
Darko Milicic
Nenad Krstic
David West
Marcus Camby
Andrew Bynum
Jameer Nelson
Andre Miller
Mike Bibby
LeBron James
Chris Kaman
Kevin Martin
Luol Deng / Howard (Have not yet accepted a potential trade…probably Howard).

Anyways, I feel like I could still use some big-man help, but most of the decent players are guards. Here are some of the guys I’m looking at picking up:

Chris Wilcox (waivers)
Mikael Pietrus
Monta Ellis
Cuttino Mobley

Right now the only players I feel that I can drop is Bynum or Darko…and I would feel silly becuase I did draft Darko at like 80 or something like that (I obviously wasn’t ready for the draft).

Bynum was a waiver pickup that I dropped Wilcox for…hopefully/maybe I’ll be able to get him back. But, Bynum could still be decent too.

Any advice? Monta Ellis looks really attractive right now, and especially when Baron goes down. Thanks!

rook,

on kaman, yes he’s been struggling, but it’s not like there are other centers out there worth picking up! i’d hold on to him.

Think Nazr Mohammed can continue to be a decent boards/blocks guy in such limited minutes? Looks like Flip doesn’t like using him down the stretch, so McDyess typically gets more run than him.

How well do you think guys like Marvin Williams and Bobby Simmons will respond after coming off of their injuries. I’m curious, because my linup (it’s above in the comments) is pretty solid, but I’m always looking for help whereever it can be found and they are sitting on waivers.

Also, what do you guys think of Andrew Bynum now. It is obvious that he won’t be given a ton more PT then he is already getting, and this is with Chris Mihm and Kwame Brown coming back soon. Bynum shows those flashes of brilliance, but then is horrible the next time.

Regardless, who do you think will have more value in the long run, Wilcox or Bynum? Bynum will block more shots, I think, but I think his other numbers will be less overwhelming. Right now I picked up Wilcox in favor of Bynum, but I might have to change that yet again if Bynum is given a consistent 30/min/game.

Thanks for any feedback on these two situations.

Oh, and in addition to Marvin and Bobby, how do you think Al Jefferson is going to do this year? Will he put up better numbers than say, Darko, Nenad, or Wilcox? Thanks.

One last issue…what is the deal with Gerald Wallace this year? I know that you guys at FBB had him pegged as a “bust”, but exactly how much of a bust do you expect him to be? Would you trade Josh Howard for him, because I think I might propose that deal soon.

Wallace was a beast last year in the defensive cats, but with a healthy Okafor and May back, I’m not sure if he’ll get as much stats as he did last year. What do you guys think about him vs. Howard… not to mention G.Wallace’s injury history?

Thanks.

how do u guys think the situation with etan thomas play out. cause right now he has had one good game.

will nazr mohammed be consistent or will he have games like last night more often.

Wat about eddy curry. will he even get 15pts, 7reb. if he gets that i’m fine.

wat about perkins and gomes. who will benefit more from al jefferson’s injury, and should i pick one of them up for someone i talked about above.

thanks.

ps. i think you guys should do a buy low, sell high collumn. it would really help out for trades and stuff.

OK, let’s see what we got here.

Nazr has been very frustrating so far — BV can tell you all about that — because his rate stats are fine, even after last night’s total debacle. But 20 mpg ain’t cutting it. Even per 30 he’s averaging 11.6 and 10.5 with 2.1 blocks. Those are #1 center numbers. But he has to earn Flip’s trust. 18 or fewer minutes in 3 of the last 4 is bad news. I can’t play someone who gets that little PT.

It will take both Williams and Simmons a while to get back into the swing of things. I like Williams better if only beacuse the Hawks have more incentive to play him and further his development. Both are FAs in my 12×13 league, but I’ll be keeping my eye on both.

Wilcox over Bynum, for sure. Bynum’s got that young stud upside, but Wilcox is getting his minutes and is starting to be the double-double machine we thought he’d be. I’ll address Al Jefferson a bit on Monday.

Wallace will turn it on eventually, I think. Those steals and blocks have a tendency to come in bunches. I’d still rather have him than Josh Howard, who is also injury-prone and a bit overrated in fantasy to begin with.

IC, that’s a big trade to make so early in the season. Personally, I don’t like to shake things up so much early on. It’s a tempting deal — usually getting 3 for 2 isn’t a good idea, but all three of those players are solid. That said, Ginobili is overrated, Miller’s hurt and Camby’s bound to be hurt. Terry is easily the most reliable option.

Etan Thomas is at best a #2 center in deep leagues. We’re Wiz fans, trust us. He’ll have an occasional big game, but he’s not a real option. I’ll cover lots of popular free agent options in tomorrow’s column.

Thanks for all the replies. Would you move Billups and Wilcox to try to get Brand? I’d still have Jameer, Knight, and Barbosa at PG.

17
Jeremy
November 12th, 2006 1:13 pm

Probably, though it does depend on how deep your league is at. Brand is by far the best player in the deal, though he has underperformed so far this year. Wilcox is a player that is just above the level of a FA pickup, so it doesn’t really hurt you to lose him as a throw-in.

I’d probably want to know more about your team before making a recommendation (H2H, Roto, etc.), but I would like getting Brand in that deal.

DM
November 12th, 2006 3:07 pm

If you can do that deal, do it. Billups is great and Wilcox is solid, but Brand is one of the top superstars in fantasy. Like Jeremy said it would help to know more details, but I’d be include to do that deal.

Hey guys. I’m a current owner of bonzi wells, and i’m really dissapointed with him so far. Should i drop him and pick someone up or wait it out.

I dropped Bonzi a few days ago. He’s not even dressing, and I’m not convinced there will be enough numbers to go around in Houston behind Yao, McGrady, Battier and Alston. If McGrady does down, it’s a different story.
