Head-to-Head’s Up: 12/18-12/24

Happy Hannukah Hebrew Nation!  Here’s a look at NBA’s week 12/18-12/24:

Four games: Golden State, Memphis, New Jersey, New Orleans, New York, Toronto, Utah.

Three Games: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Indiana, LA Clippers, LA Lakers,  Miami, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, Seattle, Washington.

Two Games: Boston, Detroit, Portland.

Al Jefferson has officially arrived.  He is delivering the goods just in time for the holidays.  I’ve always been a big proponent of big Al and I am confident that he’ll remain a near fantasy stud from here on out.  After posting 28 and 10 tonight, he’s averaging 15/11/1 with 2 swats over his 6 starts.  Plus, if/when he earns center-eligibility he could propel himself to one of the top centers in the league.  Kendrick Perkins is dealing with chronic foot problems, and Ryan Gomes could be the one asked to come off the bench once the frontcourt is completely healthy anyway.  If you’re looking for FG%, points, boards, and blocks from a soon-to-be F/C, you need to go after Jefferson.  I’d take him over whiteys like Bogut, Murphy, and Kaman.

We may have (somewhat) written off Ben Wallace over the past few weeks as being on the downside of his career… then you see his stat line tonight: 10/27/6, 3 steals, 3 blocks – Why did we doubt you Big Ben? You’ve hauled in 47 rebounds in your last two games… when was the last time someone did that?  Seriously, someone please look that up.  Wallace now has 5 straight games with double figure rebounds, and 3 straight scoring at least 10.  Perhaps he’s found his groove in Chi-Town.

Plug ‘em in, Plug ‘em in:

Carlos Arroyo / Keyon Dooling, PG:  Both of Orlando’s backup point guards are getting plenty of burn right now with Jameer Nelson sidelined with a groin injury.  Hill and Turkoglu are also out with their own alleged “day-to-day” injuries.  The absence of those three players leaves 37 ppg that need to be made up.  Arroyo will dish, Dooling will score, and both can hit about one trey per game with starter’s minutes.  Take your pick, or go ahead and plug them both in for three games next week.

Damien Wilkins, G/F: Superstar Ray Allen is expected to miss another week with a strained foot tendon, and swingman Damien Wilkins has been filling in.  In five starts Wilkins is averaging 15/5/3 plus 2 thefts per game.  He won’t shoot too many threes, but he’ll contribute in just about every other category.  Make use of Wilkins for at least one more week.  Earl Watson owners may want to get him in their lineups as well.

Luther Head, G: I recommended starting him last week because of his contributions from long range and suggested he could be a serious force if T-Mac were to miss time.  Head has now started the last two games, hitting 18 of 35, including 7 for 16 threes.  He’s a lot like Jamal Crawford in that he is a shoot-first point guard who loves dialing from long distance.  A must-start while McGrady is out.

Okay, I’m at a real bursting point. Al Jefferson is sitting out there as a FA and I know that I need to grab him. The guys at the end of my roster are Jameer Nelson, Chris Kaman, Chris Wilcox, Chris Webber, and Nenad Krstic. All of my other players aren’t guys I’m really willing to get rid of. Would you suggest dropping any of them straight up for Jefferson? Blocks are certainly a weakness for me in my H2H league.

I sent out a trade that is Jameer & Wilcox for Alston and Blount, with the idea that I’ll pickup Jefferson for Blount. How do you like that? Anyways, just looking for a little advice. Thanks.

You need to do whatever you can to get Jefferson on your roster NOW. If you can pull off a 2-for-1 that’d be great, but you’re running out of time. Jefferson shouldn’t be available in any leagues at this point.
I’d drop Wilcox or Webber straight up for Jefferson. Especially since you’re looking to upgrade in blocks. I think Nelson and Kaman will eventually come around and are worth holding on to.

I actually ended up just dropping Jameer for Jefferson, and I did it because it helped me all over the place. I looked at it this way: I recently dropped Darko and Jameer for Webber and Al Jefferson

Since it’s a H2H league, I looked at all the categories, and noticed that I had upgraded or relatively pushed in all categories except 3ptm. Webber deals out nearly as any assists as Jameer has, and I’ve been frustrated all year by Arroyo and don’t see that ending anytime soon, not to mention that Jameer isn’t a pillar of health either, seeing that he only played 66 games last year.

Anyways, I really didn’t want to drop him, but I figure it’s easier to find/trade for a quality PG than it is for a solid big man. Also, I’ve won 3ptm every week, and lost rebounding most of the time, so I felt this might be able to make me more competitive in different categories…eh, hopefully it will work out. Then again, lots of good players have hit my waiver this year, including Battier, Peja, and Cory Magette, so I figure I can probably get someone good later in the year when my waiver is higher and if one of these guys gets hurt.

It figures:

Al Jefferson’s long overdue breakout finally occurs…

…everyone and their brother stampede to snatch him off waivers…

…just prior to a week in which Boston plays only twice.

The fantasy gods have a wicked sense of humor, indeed.

How about the suspensions from the brawl? Mello and JR Smith may be suspended for 10-20 games. Who gets the benefit of this on the nuggets?

Looks like Gerald Wallace is picking up his game. Debating dropping either Krstic, Bogut, or Monta Ellis for him. All of these guys are playing solid right now, thoughts on who should go?

An interesting sidelight to last night’s brawl that hasn’t received much atention is its potential impact on Denver’s rumored play for Iverson.

If the Nugg’s roster winds up significantly depleted by suspension, it could limit their maneuverability in putting together a pacakge for AI. On the other hand, if they lose ‘Melo, their leading scorer, for 20 games or so they might be more inclined to overpay for AI with an eye toward replacing Carmelo’s production.

Just a little extra food for thought as we all try and figure out all the prospective implaictions of the impending AI deal…

Mike Bibby has found himself super-glued to my bench this year. His atrocious FG%, decline in assists, and sudden inability to hit the 3 have made it all but impossible for me to play him.

If he wasn’t Mike Bibby, I would have sent him packing weeks ago. But no one is interested in trading for him, so he just sits until the day he finally gets things turned around.

But will that day ever come? I had high hopes for him coming into the season as he’s playing for a contract this year. I also know he’s been hampered by a wrist injury on his shooting hand. But he’s been so relentlessly awful thus far that I’m starting to think we may be witnessing a player on the downside of his career.

Any other frustrated Bibby owners out there? How are you all handling it? Alex mentioned Shaun Livingston - who’s also sitting on our league’s wire - and I’m starting to wonder if swapping Bibby out for him isn’t a totally wacky idea.

Yeah, I understand the Bibby problems because I took him in the fourth round myself.

Anyways, my question revolves around David West. Apparently he now need surgery….what should I do. He’s good enough that I don’t know if he should be dropped, because 18/8 is pretty nice, but I’ve had him for quite some time and I really don’t know how long I can hang on to a guy who hasn’t played for most of the season. Anyways, is he a guy to drop, or should I wait for a player to go on fire (I already dropped Nelson for Al Jefferson).

Thanks.

ok, lots of good questions here.

DMAN, we’ll cover the brawl extensively once the suspensions are doled out but if you’ve ever wanted Earl Boykins on your team, this is probably the time to do it.

brall, gerald wallace is worth grabbing but i don’t know that i could drop any of those three guys for him just yet. see if you can swing a 2-for-1 to clear upa roster spot because wallace should definitely be owned.

alex, i wouldn’t drop either of those guys for livingston just yet, but it’s getting close to that time. I’m still hesitant on livingston for the same reasons you are, though.

bublitchki, dropping bibby for livingston is what we like to call “over-reacting.” just because bibby isn’t his typical self right now it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have value. he shouldn’t be dropped.

jeremy, check on my column today for more on david west, one of my favorites coming in to the year…

[…] Two Celtics make this week’s list - Tony Allen and Al Jefferson (Jefferson for the second week in a row). With Kendrick Perkins, Wally Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi, Theo Ratliff, Ryan Gomes, and the brain of Doc Rivers currently out for the Celtics, Big Al and to a lesser extent Allen are getting their chance to play a significant role on a crappy team. Fantasy Basketblog thinks Jefferson is good enough and smart enough, but I’m not quite as excited. I would wait to see what Doc Rivers does with playing time once everyone is healthy before buying high on Jefferson. […]
