A Very Merry Head-to-Head’s Up: 12/25-12/31

Merry Christmas Christian Nation! The NBA’s gift to you this Holiday season: All teams will be playing at least three or four games this week.  Here’s a look at 12/25-12/31:

Four games: Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, LA Clippers, LA Lakers, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Seattle, Washington.

Three Games: Atlanta, Cleveland, Golden State, Indiana, New York, Orlando, Sacramento, San Antonio, Toronto, Utah.

Last week we discussed the emergence of the Celtics’ new starting center Al Jefferson.  Yesterday we learned that Boston’s main man Paul Pierce will miss 2-3 weeks with an injury.  Rarely, does an injury to just one player affect (benefit) as many players as this one.  We know that Jefferson and Tony Allen have been stepping it up in the absence of starters Wally and Perkins, but now the C’s leader in minutes (38.4), points (26.6), assists (4.3), and threes (2.5) is out and all his numbers are there for the taking.  Now the question is who wants them?  DM recommended picking up Ryan Gomes yesterday (not a bad idea), but I think last year’s surprise Delonte West will be the one to benefit most during Pierce’s absence.  The Washington DC native has been sporadic so far this season with inconsistent minutes backing up a disappointing Sebastian Telfair, but he has seen a recent uptick in playing time even before Pierce got hurt.  West should now be in line for 30-35 minutes a night.  Keep in mind he’s got sneaky value as an across-the-board contributor from the guard position.
The thing that’s nice about Pierce missing time (except for his owners of course) is that it increases the value of just about everyone on the team.  Jefferson and Allen should continue to surge, Gomes and West are sure to pick it up, and even youngster Gerald Green has an opportunity to shine (especially from long range) if he gets hot and earns some playing time.  All of the aforementioned players should be worth starting as the Celtics look forward to four games next week.  I must admit I own and plan on using most of them (Jefferson, Allen, West, Telfair) over the next couple weeks.

Plug ‘em in, Plug ‘em in:

Brendan Haywood, C: I’m not very comfortable recommending Haywood, not ever.  But, you could do worse this week if you’re looking for a second center.  The Wizards’ big man is averaging 8/11/2 with 2 blocks and 65%FG over his last five games.  He’s definitely inconsistent, but he’s getting minutes and has a full schedule on tap, so why not.
Other centers for your consideration:
Mark Blount:
His minutes are up this month (31.8) and he’s averaging 16/9/1 over the last 10 days.  He may not be quite as ugly as Calvin Booth, but the T-Wolves have four matchups this week.
Erick Dampier: Big game the other night (22 and 16). He should chip in a bit more with Dirk missing a couple games.  Decent option with four games coming up.

Speedy Claxton, PG: Over the first six weeks of the season, the Hawks’ prized offseason acquisition failed to top 9 points or 5 assists in any single game.  I subsequently dropped him.  Tyronn Lue goes down, Mr. Claxton sees 40 minutes per game this past week and averages 14/3/10 with 3.7 spg.  Damn.  I shoulda dropped Bassy instead.  Marvin Williams is back in action and Childress is due back any day now, so Claxton should have plenty of options going forward.  If he can stay healthy and maintain 30+ mpg, Speedy will remain in fantasy lineups for the foreseeable future.

Keep on Truckin’:
Luther Head, G: The dude averages 17/5/4 with 2.8 threes and 1.4 steals per game as a starter.  He’s even hitting a solid 45% of his shots when in the starting lineup.  Yes, he’s great when McGrady is out, but if he keeps it up, Head may be able to earn enough playing time to remain a decent utility player for the rest of the season.

Damien Wilkins, G/F: Just when Ray Allen is due back, the Sonics’ #2 scoring threat Rashard Lewis goes and hurts his shooting hand.  Wilkins is averaging 13/4/3 and a nifty 2 steals in 34 mpg filling-in for Allen and should continue to see plenty of time on the court with Lewis now sidelined.  Keep him in your lineups at least through New Year’s.

That loud “FUCK!!!” you just heard was BV reacting to the news that Rashard Lewis is out for 8 weeks. Injuries are especially out of control this year, no?

Camby will also be out for the next two weeks, this is getting ridiculous

Would you drop Peja to pick up Damien Wilkins in a day-to-day H2H league? Having a dead spot really kills in this format but having Peja around for playoffs is important too

What is this about Camby being out? I haven’t heard anything about it, and it would really suck since I own Pierce, Camby, David West, & Chris Webber right now.

hey i heard that earl watson will be the starting shooting guard with lewis out… would any of you drop jr smith for him?

i hate camby
a chance for him to be the #2 option for at least 10 games or so and he goes and gets injured

Hmm, I wonder who is going to step in up, since their starting lineup is gonna be AI, DeMarr Johnson, Kleiza, Najara and Nene?

Nene might have a good stretch, just becuase he has some decent talent and AI will have a worse supporting cast than he did in Philly, at least for a couple of weeks.

What do you guys think of Lewis’s value right now? I am in 1st place in a H2H with a very nice lead. Pending severe injuries, I’m in great position to coast to 1st. The Lewis owner is in trouble and decimated by injuries. I’m strongly considering making a move for Lewis as some stretch run insurance and some big-time playoff ammo. Do you think something like a Charlie V or Luol Deng gets it done? Too much or too little?

Depends on what you’re strong in, but throwing out Charlie V would be good. Bucks have a lot of decent players, and Lewis is a fantasy stud. I like Deng because of his FG%, so I’d keep him if possible.

Wow, I cannot believe the last week, as I have literally lost over 1/3 of my team to injuries (Pierce, Krstic, Camby + D.West, Chris Webber)

Anyways, I now need to find a replacement for Krstic, and here are the players that I am looking at. I’d appreciate any advice:

John Salmons: Not a post player, but he gives me stats in different areas and I’ve been impressed since he played for the 76ers last year. He just notched a triple-double, and he has been playing well in the starting lineup lately, but I don’t like having players who aren’t starters, and he won’t be when Kevin Martin and Ron Artest are both healthy.

Brendan Haywood: I noticed the name in the most recent article, but didn’t think anything of it until I saw his play against the Suns, where he played probably one of the best games he has had all year. As a starter he HAS averaged 8/10 with 1.5+ blocks, so if he can get 30 minutes than I guess it wouldn’t be too bad.

Channing Frye: I never like him in college, so I guess that I am biased, but he does shoot great from the stripe for a big man, even though sometimes the boards and blocks are lacking. Curry is still in the zone and Lee is playing great, but at times last year Frye seemed like the only decent big on the roster…what is his value going forward?

Nene: With Camby and the rest of the Nuggets out, Camby will have to play big minutes and hopefully can respond with more outings like his last 8/15 night. Whatcha think?

Corey Magette: I’m not a huge fan of his game, since he doesn’t contribute many defensive cats. But, he usually dominates FT%…one of the best in the league at doing so because he gets there often and shoots a high percentage. What do you think about his abilities going forward?

Anyways, I’m really stuck, as as you can see there are lots of options out there for me. There is also players like Darko out there on the wavier. Unfortunately for me, someone picked up Jameer Nelson yesterday AFTER the injury to Krstic but before I knew how bad it was going to be. Argh.

Thanks for any advice.

I gotta say, our favorite/least favorite player, Brenda(n) Haywood, has been playing some good ball lately. He’ll be good for boards, some blocks, a few steals and deceng FG%, but even if he keeps his starting job once Etan Thomas comes back, he’ll be inconsistent. He needs ~33mpg to be effective.

Salmons looked good, and he gives a little of everything, and things are definitely amiss in Sacramento. Artest could be out for a while or he could come back right after Christmas and be fine. Who knows?

Frye can score, Nene can board, but both of them sorta scare me. Maggette’s being jerked around a lot. Hard to really recommend any of the ones listed, maybe try Nene short term since you need a center and he’s bound to at least get some boards.

Also, I don’t see it around being reported yet, but the Hawks announcers said Josh Smith will be out for a month after hernia surgery, so Marvin Williams should be strong in that time span and Josh Childress might even be good if he can ever come back.

Yeah, I actually picked up Nene because I figured, someone has to play. But, long term, with AI, JR and Carmelo, there won’t be any shots, and Nene will have to compete in a front court with Camby (who I own), Najera, & Reggie Evans, the rebounding machine.

If Artest is going to be hurt for a while, then yeah, Salmons in the guy I’d go after. However, a few more names have surfaced that I’m considering. Mainly, Marvin Williams or Charlie Bell. I too noticed that Josh Smith was absent from today’s game, and Marvin could produce quite a bit in the time that he is gone, meanwhile Charlie Bell has strung some good games together and I like that he’ll get me some extra threes and steals, without killing my %’s, which he is quite good when he starts.

Anyways, I guess I’ll have to sort this one out over the course of the next day or so, but I doubt I’ll hang onto Nene. What do you guys think about Marvin vs. Charlie Bell? Thanks.

OMFG yao’s out for 6 weeks. kill me. now.

Yeah, I think I might make a play for Yao and Josh Smith, both owned by the same person. Well…in about three weeks when they get desperate and it won’t hurt me so bad.

Also, to end the posts above where I have been debating on whom to pickup, I finally settled on Matt Barnes. I know…who? But the guy has been the #22 rated player in my league for the past month due to him being part of the 1/1/1 club (threes/blocks/steals). His line of 20/12/5 with 3 threes tonight helped too.

Anyways, the other guys I was looking at were mainly Marvin Williams and Charlie Bell. Bell has better steals and assists, and Marvin had more boards and more secure playing time available. But, Barnes has a good skillset and with Nelson running small, hopefully Barnes can stay consistent enough. Otherwise I’ll probably dump him for one of those two. Whatcha think? Or are these other guys better for the long haul? Thanks.

Jeremy, I actually just picked up Matt Barnes myself. Warriors are dropping left and right, so someone’s gotta play and Nellie seems to like him, so why not? That said, I’d probably go with Marvin Williams instead. The Hawks need to see what they have in him, so he’s going to be out there. Last night they were getting destroyed, Joe Johnson was pulled with two mintues left in the 3rd, but Williams was out there during garbage time, just to get him back into the swing of things. With Josh Smith out, both point guards and Pachulia hurting, he’ll have no choice but to put up some numebrs.

I’ve lucked out at least thus far on the injury bug that’s going around (knock on wood), and my team has been steadily improving after a slow start. Best part is the two teams I’m neck and neck with at the top have recently lost Yao, Shard and Pierce. Possibly losing Monta Ellis seems an alright trade for those three.

My current concern is that Hinrich has had a string of poor games, has anyone been watching the Bulls that could give me some insight as to whats going on? I’d be a lot more bummed out about this if I hadn’t picked Mo Williams off the waver wire a few weeks ago.

Merry christmas guys. Got a quick question, is Damien Wilkins worth holding on to right now? I picked him up because of the Lewis injury but Watson ended up starting, should I go ahead and drop him now for someone else? (Mikki Moore, Matt Barnes, Garbajosa). Thanks!
