Shaq Attack

I know the rumors were out there, but did anyone seriously believe this trade was going to go down? In a surprising move by penny-pinching Robert Sarver, the Phoenix Suns will send Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks for Shaquille O’Neal pending a physical on Wednesday. Not to jump the gun, but lets take a quick look at the fantasy breakdown for each team:

Phoenix Suns:

With a healthy O’Neal, Amare Stoudamire will slide down to his natural PF spot. It’s a mystery how O’Neal will blend with the run and gun methodology that Steve Nash and company employ, but it’s same to assume that Shaq, when healthy, will have fantasy value in points, boards and blocks with numbers similar to his season averages. However, in reality, I think this move will benefit the Sun’s wingmen - Hill, Bell and Diaw - the most. One of the big questions is how healthy Shaq can remain; if he is injured, expect a near 6-man rotation between these five Suns and Barbosa. With the extra shots to go around and boards to grab, nearly all Suns players should see a small boost in numbers. Diaw, in particular, would promise to have some of the extra value he had during Grant Hill’s injury absence and if he’s available you may want to stash him on your bench right now.

Miami Heat:

Way to go and turn around the franchise just like that. Instead of hemorrhaging money on Kazzam, they pair Dwayne Wade with a premier wing-player and defender in Marion. I’m not sure if the Heat are interested in giving Marion an extension, but regardless they’ll save lots of money and it may help in resigning Wade and also make the Heat more competitive in the short run. With this change in scenery, we’ll see if Marion benefited from a Nash Effect, similar to the impact Jason Kidd has on his teammates. My guess is that both Wade and Marion can coexist and get their numbers, keeping their value; the real question of value goes to the fringe guys like Ricky Davis, Dorrell Wright and Daequan Cook. It will be interesting to see what position they play Marion at (SF or PF) and that will impact the value of these other players. The last piece of the puzzle is the addition of Marcus Banks. Banks, whose contract the Suns have been trying to offload, will serve as a capable starting PG if Jason Williams is sidelined with injury. In 29 games starting for the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2005, Banks averaged 12/5/3 with 1+ steals, an occasional 3PTM and good percentages in 30 minutes per. Banks is still very young and could easily end up gaining the most fantasy value out of any player involved on these two teams; as such it would be wise to add him to your watch list.

As crazy as the Gasol trade was for fantasy purposes, this is perhaps even more shocking as one of the top fantasy players in the game (Marion) changes teams and conferences. I really didn’t believe the trade at first until I saw it confirmed on Yahoo! sports. In a strange way, it kind of makes sense for both teams, though in the Suns case it will depend on Shaq’s health. It’s uncertain how some key elements of this trade will play out and I’m sad that the Suns no longer have three first-round fantasy selections (as they were the only team with that distinction), but it’ll certainly be fun to follow and watch.

Now back to studying for my midterm tomorrow. Thank Jago for distracting me and thus motivating me to write this bit up…but if I take another break tonight it’ll be to run down to the bar and have one drink for Mardi Gras. Cheers!

not a great trade for the suns IMO. Couldnt they have gotten gasol from memphis? probably not, memphis wanted expiring contracts to rebuild. anyways, maybe shaw will find his health with a contender. Shaq and Amare in the frontcourt will be fierce, but if shaq misses time, diaw is not nearly the help defender amare was. Thats alot of trouble, but i guess diaws value gets a bump if/when shaq sits.

My fantasy outlook is that Diaw benefits most. With *ahem* dj strawberry, sean marks, and brian skinners value to remain that same. yes, youre welcome for that insight :)

No doubt, Diaw or Banks gain the most value depending on injuries. In the short term with Shaq out, you have to like Diaw right now.

sorry, i typed that late last night and had some typos.

I meant to say that diaw isnt nearly the help defender that marion is. That would create some trouble if shaq misses time, which should be expected. A diaw, stoudamire frontcourt isnt scary to anyone. Marion was always there with help defense if someone got by hill, bell, nash.

From a fantasy perspective, i think jeremy is right. Diaw should benefit the most, banks would be next if he can get the starting job from jason williams.

I dropped matt barnes for diaw about a week ago not having any idea about this trade. Im happy with my pickup now and the idea of diaws minutes depending on shaqs health makes me even happier as the suns wont run shaq out there every day for 30+ minutes. The suns will save shaq for the playoffs, thats why they got him right? To beat the spur, mavs, and lakers?

In my opinion, i think diaw is a lock for 25-30 min night.

Finally, looking at the salary cap. This is a good move for the suns. Nash, shaq, and bells contracts are done in 2010 and that frees up almost 40 mil. stoudamire has a player option in 2011, so the suns will likely use some cash to extend him. So the suns have stoudamire, diaw, and barbosa past 2011, plus whatever FA or two they sign with all that cap room.

I read somewhere that the heat have cap room too with this deal, but i dont care about the heat, so i wont write about them.

What i would like to know is whats happened to ricky davis? Is he a good buy low candidate in hopes that he is traded or dwyane wade shuts it down for the rest of the season and he splits shots with marion? Davis can still play, he has the rep as a selfish player “http://youtube.com/watch?v=MezCclCSjNw”
but a contender could use him.

It is entirely possible that Marion’s value goes through the roof in Miami. Yes, Nash got Marion some easy buckets - but that value was neutralized by the amount of players who could score on Phoenix. Marion was at best the 3rd option, and frequently was the 5th option on the court behind Barbosa, Hill, and/or Bell. In Miami, Marion is suddenly the clear #2 behind Wade. If Miami has any interest in keeping Marion after this season, they’re going to get him the ball on offense.

There is also no more Amare to steal all the easy buckets inside from Marion. Marion’s best season in the last couple of years was the one without Amare.

So we’ll see - but a return of Marion to the 20-point level (and a nightly double double) is extremely possible.

Kerr is really starting to get on my nerves. Giving up a phoenix AND atlanta pick plus kurt thomas for an exception, giving james jones and a pick for cash, and now this? the suns could have hoped to get 2nd or third in the West, leaving the lakers in 4th or 5th, but now, it is a strong possibility the lakers pass the suns

This was a great move for the suns. They were NOT going to win a championship in the West with all those other redwoods.

The lakers will be better over the long haul, since there stars are young.

But the suns are better right now and for the next 1.5 years.

Shaq Amare and Nash. That’s better then Kobe, Bynum and Gasol.

I think Amare’s value increases in this trade. He instantly becomes the 1st option on offense. He won’t have to guard opposing centers on defense. What other power forward in the league has the speed and strength to defend amare? Marion rebounds better than Shaq. Some Amare’s rebounding increases with or without shaq. The only category he might go down in is blocks, b/c he won’t be playing center once shaq returns.

anybody out there?

I’d appreciate thoughts on the following proposed trade

I give up:
Rasheed Wallace
Rip Hamilton
Anthony Carter

I get:
Zach Randolf
Andre Miller
Leandro Barbosa

I am looking to upgrade my second PG and bolster my assists. Any thoughts?

i’m in the minority that thing the Suns will actually become better with Shaq on the team. Shaq WILL take it upon himself to make Amare better and the Suns will become a stronger, bigger and tougher team in the middle–even if they have to slow down their offense mightily.

Bibby traded. Kidd traded. Nothing here.

February 5th was the last post. Today is the 19th. Too bad. I used to like it here. Guess I’ll find somewhere else to go for my fantasy fix.

Yeah, sorry about the site guys. I don’t know what to tell you except everyone is ridiculously busy. I’m working on my thesis so that I can graduate, and the others have had sudden increased obligations too. But I’ll try to put out something with consistency.
