Arenas to Return Saturday 3/28

gilbert-arenas-playoffsAs of now, Gilbert Arenas is a game time decision for the Wizards game on Saturday 3/28/09. He will most likely play sparingly and he will not play in back to back games for sure. He might have been worth owning this whole time in Head 2 Head leagues for the playoffs but it doesn’t look like he will have much of an impact. It would have been nice to see him play a couple weeks ago and get into better game shape before the fantasy playoffs began but the Wizards don’t really care about Arenas’ fantasy value I’m sure.

I don’t see him getting enough minutes the rest of the season to even consider starting him unless you are in a roto league and need scoring. You know that Arenas will take every shot possible when he returns to the court. This shouldn’t really do anything to any of the other Wizards and their stats because Arenas doesn’t look to be getting significant minutes. Personally, I don’t see why the Wizards are even putting him out there. The risk is much higher than the reward. They should just leave him on the bench and protect their franchise player until next year when they can start over fresh.

Yahoo Tie Breakers

300_110614As we conclude the regular fantasy basketball season and head into playoff time, I’d like to point out a major flaw in tie breaking systems. I am currently in a Yahoo Head-2-Head Fantasy Basketball League and for the past 14 weeks I (Cobra) have been in first place. Now, in the final week of the regular season I went 1-4 (not a good showing) and the second place (Mongoose) team went 4-0-1. This left me with a record of 62-43-0 while Mongoose was left with a 61-42-2 record. According to Yahoo, this puts us in a tie since he had two ties in categories during the regular season, they count as half wins. That would make our records equal.

Now it was a great showing on his part coming back and fighting the whole way through to squeak out a virtual tie with me. Yahoo tie breaking rules in Head-2-Head leagues states that if there is a tie at the end of the regular season, winning percentage will be used to decide the seed. If that doesn’t work, the previous week’s records will be used.

I know I’m not the only person who thinks this is a bunch of crap. I have written a letter to Yahoo that I’m sure will be deleted as soon as it has been read (that is if it is even read at all). Let me know what you guys think about this rule. It really needs to be changed.

Captain Jack Blowing Up!

73920285BB026_Golden_State_Over the last week, Stephen Jackson has been blowing up in fantasy terms to the tune of 23.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 8.7 apg and 1 spg. Those are great stats to have in your lineup and S-Jax is always capable of puuting up numbers along those lines. The only problem here is that on Sunday night he received two more technical fouls resulting in an ejection and a subsequent one game suspension (most likely to be served Tuesday night). Now, every other technical S-Jax gets will cost him another one game suspension.

The NBA states that the 16th technical results in a one game suspension and every other technical (18,20,22 etc…) will also result in a one game suspension. Take it from me, a former Rasheed Wallace owner, it is no fun having a player in your starting lineup during playoffs that has a very good chance of being suspended. If you take the current state of the Warriors and add that to the volatile enthusiasm S-Jax has for the game you’ll see that there is a large possibility that he will miss at least one more game.

In one of my leagues, my opponent either didn’t see the note about the suspension or he just figures that three games this week from S-Jax is better than any other options he had on his bench. He is already guaranteed a playoff spot so it won’t hurt him too much but it could help me secure the best season record which is a big deal in my league if you know what I mean. These are things you have to take into consideration now that most fantasy playoffs begin next week.

Kaman On the Mend

chris_kamanLos Angeles Clippers’ Center Chris Kaman has been taking part in half-court two-on-two drills lately. It is still unsure when he will be able to return to the court but a lot of people think it could be the Clippers getaway game on Tuesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

This would be a pretty big deal for a lot of fantasy managers. Not only will owners be getting back a potentially huge fantasy boost to their rosters, but other owners will be feeling the ripple effect his return has on the entire Clippers roster. Marcus Camby and Zach Randolph owners will lose stats because of it.

Camby owners are safe for now while Randolph is tending to his ill father but once he returns, there will be a major logjam at the 4 and 5 positions for the Clippers. Granted Kaman will need some time to get reacquainted with life on the court so he probably won’t be overused in the beginning. Still, Camby owners figure to take a major hit once all three players are healthy and ready to go at full speed. Read the rest of this entry »

Playoff Run Crunch Time

76076116JM001_MAGIC_SONICSNow is the time to really dig deep and assess your fantasy roster. If you have an overwhelming lead in some categories, you might want to make a trade to bolster other categories that you might have a chance at moving up in. I like to take a look at my teams and evaluate what my strengths are and then search through the remaining teams and see who needs what I have.

Now you might not get fair value in return here because it is so late in the season and people are scared to give up big name players. You shouldn’t be thinking that way at all. Don’t be afraid to give up a Jason Kidd if you are dominating assists but need points. Or, don’t worry about losing Dwight Howard’s rebounds or blocks if you have a commanding lead in those categories. Remember, it’s not about who wins you the championship, but that you actually win it. Read the rest of this entry »
